Opera has finally cleaned up their mess…

Before and after: words are unecessary…

Opera, your friendly Norwegian browser and hi-tech company has done more than release a new version of their desktop browser – Opera 10 – they have also cleaned up one of the messiest spots in my dock.

After years of terrorizing it’s loyal fan base with a disgusting and outdated dock icon (at least for Mac users), Opera have hired the excellent John Hicks to do some touch ups. My biggest gripe with the old icon was it’s horisontally offset shadow, destroying the harmony of the dock, but also the typogram itself, with an ugly «O» dressed up in a cheap 90’s bling effect. Hicks addresses both these concerns and deliveres a beautiful, modern icon, that is both clean and symmetrical.

What about the logo

John Hicks is also the man behind the Firefox and Thunderbird icons. Opera still haven’t updated their logo to reflect the new icon, but I bet they will soon.

Some time ago I even did a redesign myself and shared it with others that felt my disgust. That version was only addressing the non symmetric character of the icon, and not the design itself. You can still download it if you prefer it over the new design…
